No. 3 Bruins Too Much For Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Tanya Gandy registered a season-high four goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women’s water polo team past No. 15 Long Beach State, 13-4, Thursday evening in the 49ers’ season-opening contest. UCLA used a 6-0 scoring run to open the game and held on for the non-conference victory.
The Bruins led 4-0 after the first quarter, taking advantage of goals by sophomore Priscilla Orozco at the 6:15 and 0:07 marks, one goal by Gandy at 4:47 and another strike by senior Anne Belden at 2:23.
UCLA (4-0) increased its margin to 6-0 early in the second frame on goals from Gandy and Orozco.
Long Beach State (0-1) got on the board with one goal from Lauren Sieprath with 98 seconds to play before halftime, reducing its deficit to 6-1. UCLA outscored Long Beach State by a 4-1 margin in the third quarter and by a 3-2 tally in the final period.
Orozco finished the evening with three goals and Belden totaled two goals. UCLA also received one goal each from senior Katie Rulon, sophomore Megan Burmeister and freshmen Randi Bresee and KK Clark.

The Bruins play in the Stanford Invitational this weekend, beginning Saturday, Feb. 7. UCLA faces No. 10 San Jose State on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. before playing No. 4 Hawai’i at 5:45 p.m. All four matches this weekend will take place at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center.
