Woods scores eight as Brown falls to California Baptist in double OT

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Senior Kate Woods rattled off eight goals during two games as Brown dropped a double-overtime heartbreaker to Cal Baptist 10-9 before topping Concordia (Calif.) 10-8 at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Wednesday. With the split, the Bears move to 11-11 on the season.

Woods scored three times against the Lancers and five times against the Eagles while snagging five steals in the opener. Senior Emily McNamara, sophomore Olivia Santiago and freshman Shannon Crowley each tallied two goals, while junior Liz Rosen registered a goal, five assists and three steals in the overtime setback. Senior Sarah Shin totaled 11 saves between the two showdowns.

A true back-and-forth affair, Brown and Cal Baptist were knotted at 3-3 after one quarter but the Bears fired in two unanswered goals in the second to move ahead 5-3. Tallies from Woods and Santiago were undone after the Lancers struck back on a power play and a penalty shot, followed shortly by another man-up goals with 21 seconds left in the half to take a 6-5 advantage after two quarters.

The pair of powerful offenses diminished slightly in the second half with Hannah Evans’ last-second goal in the third pushing a 7-7 tie. Christina Young hit the back of the net with 4:29 left in regulation to put Cal Baptist ahead 8-7, but Woods tossed in the most dramatic of her three goals to even the score at 8-8 with 1:51 remaining. A series of last-minute timeouts yielded no scoring and sent the game to overtime.

In the first extra period, the Bears drew an ejection with 1:19 left on the clock and Crowley cashed in, sinking the goal to put her team ahead 9-8 after the first overtime. Cal Baptist refused to pack it in, however, and Evans secured the equalizer with 2:27 left in the second overtime. An ejection with 14 seconds put the Lancers on the advantage and Young capitalized, sinking the game-winner with 11 seconds left.
