WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The top-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling topped the University of Central Missouri 39-6 in the third and final match of the 2009 MIAA duals Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks won the three duals by a combined score of 121-18.

The win marks just the third time in school history UNO has finished the season with an undefeated record in duals. The Mavericks also went undefeated in the 1969-70 (14-0) and 2005-06 (10-0) seasons. In both those years UNO captured the National Championship.    

Ross Taplin pinned all three of his opponents, while Esai Dominguez and Aaron Denson won by pinfall in two of their three matches.

After scoring a pin in his last match, Matt Rein set the tone early, recording a technical fall victory in the first bout at 125 pounds. Second-ranked Maverick wrestlers Cody Garcia and Mario Morgan each won the next two matches by decisions. Garcia topped No. 7 Grant Baker, 6-4, at 133 pounds, while Morgan scored a 1-0 decision against UCM’s Cory Bloodgood.   

Dominguez scored the first Maverick pin of the contest, pinning Mules’ 149-pounder Will Forrest in 4:47. Redshirt freshman Nathan Sigman (157) won his second dual victory with an 8-5 decision over Denis Ryzhoz.

The Mavericks won its next two matches by pin. At 165 pounds, Denson pinned UCM’s Andrew Hicklin in 5:49, while Taplin (174) pinned Conor Fitzgerald in just 2:57.

Pankoke tallied the Mavericks’ only major decision in the bout at 184 pounds. The senior defeated Travis Barbarick, 10-2.

After UNO forfeited its match at 197 pounds, 285-pounder Bryce Boehm won his first dual match of the season, scoring a 5-0 decision over fifth-ranked Cody Beck in the final match.

UNO will be idle for two weeks before traveling to Kirksville, Mo. for the Midwest Regional Championships on March 1.
