No. 10 Mercyhurst takes two
Lakers down Tiffin, No. 14 West Liberty for 11th and 12th wins
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- No. 10 Mercyhurst was led by five wrestlers who posted wins in both of the Lakers' matches on Saturday. Mercyhurst earned its 11th and 12th victories of the year as they beat Tiffin 34-7 before knocking off No.14 West Liberty 23-17.
Mercyhurst took the mat first against the Dragons of Tiffin winning eight of the 10 bouts. Kody Young (133 pounds) rolled to his 27th win of the season after beating Stephen Pastor 18-9. Jeremy Landowski (141 pounds) and Michael Griffith (149 pounds) followed Young with wins of their own. Landowski earned a decision win while Griffith won with a takedown in overtime.
The Lakers' 165 and 174-pounders each walked off the mat with decision wins. Adam Lamancusa (165 pounds) overtook Christopher Baker with a 3-1 showing while August Mizia (174 pounds) edged out Jacob Cramer 6-5.
In their second match of the day Jordan Shields and Michael Pollard pushed the Lakers past the Hilltoppers after recording wins against regionally ranked opponents. Shields, the Lakers 157-pounder, snuck by the fifth-ranked grappler in the region, Jarrod Shaw of West Liberty, with a 1-0 decision win. Pollard sealed the victory by a major decision win against Derrick Williams. Williams is ranked sixth at the 184 pound class in the region.
Ryan Bohince started the match with a major decision win and Young followed the 125-pounder with a technical fall win giving the Lakers an early 9-0 lead over the Hilltoppers. Griffith earned his second win of the day after putting away A.J. Gavin. August Mizia also earned a win for the Lakers in their 23-17 victory against West Liberty.
