Kwiat pushes No. 10 Ohio Northern to 3-1 record on opening weekend
OLIVET, Mich. -- No. 10 Ohio Northern opened its 2012-13 dual meet season with a 3-1 record at the Olivet Duals on Saturday at the Cutler Events Center.
The Polar Bears defeated No. 12 Olivet 26-15, Alma 20-15 and Trine 25-12 after opening the day with a 39-3 loss to No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Senior three-time All-American Kyle Kwiat, the defending NCAA champion and No. 1-ranked this season, led ONU with a perfect 4-0 record. Kwiat went 2-0 at 184 pounds and 2-0 at 174 pounds.
Kwiat was the only ONU wrestler to earn a win against Wisconsin-Whitewater, taking a 5-0 decision against Ryan Aprahamian.
Junior Michael Pawlitz posted a 3-0 record at 197 pounds, sophomore Cody Lovejoy went 2-0 at heavyweight and freshman Max Brooke went 2-0 at 157 pounds for ONU.
The Polar Bears used different lineups in all four matches and 21 different wrestlers saw varsity action on the day. They also collected four pins on the day and had nine total bonus-point vicotries in the four dual meets.
