Upper Iowa wins interdivisional match with WLC

Upper Iowa, No. 17 in the latest NWCA's Division II poll, dominated its match with Division III Wisconsin-La Crosse in New Hampton, Iowa Friday night.

In the dual that crossed division lines, Upper Iowa claimed eight of the ten matches including five by fall. The Eagles came into the contest with a 5-0 record and the No. 6 ranking in the latest Division III poll.

Garrett Wangsness opened the match for the Peacocks with a dominating 9-0 major decision at 125 pounds. The sophomore scored an early takedown racking up nearly six minutes of ride time and adding a second takedown and two nearfall points in the second period.

Matt Paulus followed the opening win with UIU's first win by fall. Paulus recorded his pin after a reversal and two nearfall points at the 2:12 mark of the first period. Jordan Roths made it 13-0 with a 5-2 decision at 141 pounds. Roths got a takedown in the second period and a reversal in the third period to fuel his victory.

The Eagles claimed a win by fall at 149 pounds by Kasey Einerson just 40 seconds into the match.

Upper Iowa answered in a big way. The Peacocks held a 13-6 lead heading to the 157 pound match, but UIU pushed their lead from six to thirty points thanks to four consecutive wins by fall.

Jordan Rinken started the run with a pin just 22 seconds into the second period. Colbey Vance followed with a pin just 15 seconds before the end of the match as he was leading 9-3. Dalton Westerlund kept the train rolling with UIU's fastest pin of the night (1:22) and Blake Sorensen (184) capped the run off with a pin at the 1:30 mark after taking an early 5-0 lead.

With UIU leading 37-6, Brock Gobin took to the mat at 197 pounds and fought hard but dropped a 1-0 decision to Eric Twohey, who improved to 17-0 on the season.

Logan Hopp closed out the dual with an exciting heavyweight match against Cody Endres. Leading 3-2 in the third period, Hopp scored a late takedown and added two nearfall points to secure the 7-2 victory.

College wrestling: DII and DIII regionals help shape award standings headed into NCAA championships

Division II and III wrestlers competed in their NCAA regional qualifying tournaments over the weekend to set the standings headed into the NCAA championships. These are the wrestling leading the Most Dominant Wrester, fall and tech fall standings across all three divisions.

NCAA Wrestling Awards standings: Penn State holds top three positions for most dominant in Division I

No. 1 ranked Penn State holds the top three positions for most dominant in Division I. Bo Nickal is first for the Nittany Lions by producing 5.38 average team points per match, followed by Jason Nolf (5.23) and Vincenzo Joseph (4.95). Iowa 165-pounder Alex Marinelli is fourth with 4.74 points, while Cornell 141-pounder Yianni Diakomihalis is fifth with 4.67 points. 

Races remain close in the chase for NCAA Wrestling Awards

The NCAA has released updated standings for the 2019 NCAA Wrestling Awards that will be awarded in March at the respective Division I, II and III Wrestling Championships.
